Drinking and Driving

Drinking and driving is one of the biggest road safety issues in Ontario. During the past decade over 2,000 lives have been due to an impaired driver. Deaths, injuries and personal tragedies are real factors when impaired driving occurs.

The MTO offers a full statistics sheet.

Nearing the end of October of this year, four young teens lost their lives due to a collision with a 21 year old who had
been drinking and driving. These four young teens were all 16 years of age or under. Should we as a province and country start demanding tougher laws againstdrinking and driving or should we be making more outreach programs to help young drivers make better decisions?

As of 2010 Ontario`s young drivers willface some of the toughest age restrictions on drinking and driving in Canada. Drivers under 21 years of age are not allowed to consume any alcohol before getting behind the wheel.
There is now a zero tolerance limit to drivers under the age of 21. For thefull article in the Toronto Star  click here.

  1. Do speeding tickets increase  my car insurance rates?
  2. Should I try to fight the traffic ticket?

Answer

Some insurers may not increase your insurance premiums, if you have an otherwise clean driving record. However every automobile insurer is different and accordingly have different policies on rate increases for moving violations like speeding tickets, careless driving or driving while suspended. Going to traffic court, with the assistance of a licensed Ontario Paralegal or lawyer is your best defence in fighting traffic tickets.

Using their knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Court system and Highway Traffic Act, they are often able to help in the reduction of demerit points or with beating a traffic ticket completely.
